Some of the world's most exciting restaurants succeed not by doing one thing perfectly, but by drawing on the full richness of a culinary tradition. Preeda, at Bötzowstraße 25 in Prenzlauer Berg, is built on a premise that is rarer in Berlin than it ought to be: that Thai cooking and Vietnamese cooking belong together at the same table.

This is not a gimmick. It is a statement about geography, history and flavour that makes genuine sense once you understand the cuisines involved.

Two Cuisines, One Philosophy

Thailand and Vietnam share a border, a river basin and thousands of years of cultural exchange. Their cuisines are distinct — genuinely, profoundly so — but they share a philosophical foundation: the belief that food should balance, simultaneously, the five fundamental taste profiles. Sweet. Sour. Salty. Bitter. Umami. Neither cuisine is content with one-dimensional flavour. Both demand complexity, freshness and a respect for the aromatic ingredients — lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime, fresh herbs — that make Southeast Asian cooking unlike anything else in the world.

Preeda's dual menu is an expression of this shared philosophy. The Thai dishes and the Vietnamese dishes are not fighting for space on the menu. They are in conversation with each other.

What Makes Thai Cuisine Distinct

Thai cooking is characterised by its use of curry pastes — complex, labour-intensive preparations of dried and fresh aromatics that form the flavour foundation of the cuisine. Thai food tends toward the rich and aromatic: coconut milk plays a central role in central and southern Thai cooking, whilst northern Thai dishes like khao soi pull the cuisine toward Chinese-influenced noodle territory.

Key flavour markers: galangal (not ginger — these are different plants with fundamentally different flavours), kaffir lime zest and leaves, lemongrass, fish sauce, shrimp paste, palm sugar and a range of fresh and dried chillis.

At Preeda, the Thai menu includes:

Classic curries (green, red, Massaman, Panang) made with house-prepared pastes
Tom Kha Gai and Tom Yum soups
Pad Thai with tamarind-based sauce
Tod Man Pla (Thai fish cakes)
Larb and Som Tam salads

What Makes Vietnamese Cuisine Distinct

Vietnamese cooking takes a different path. Where Thai food leans into richness and paste-based depth, Vietnamese cuisine prioritises clarity: clean broths, fresh herbs, lighter sauces. The French colonial period left its mark — bánh mì sandwiches, pâtés and coffee culture — but the underlying cuisine is fundamentally about brightness, balance and the extraordinary use of fresh herbs at the table.

The archetypal Vietnamese dish is Phở — a bone broth simmered for hours with star anise, cinnamon, cloves and ginger, served with rice noodles, thinly sliced beef or chicken, and a forest of fresh garnishes: bean sprouts, Thai basil, coriander, lime, fresh chilli and hoisin. The broth is the art; the table garnishes are the personalisation.

Other pillars of Vietnamese cuisine: Bún Bò Huế (spicy beef noodle soup from the imperial city of Huế), Gỏi cuốn (fresh spring rolls), Cơm tấm (broken rice with grilled meat), and the entire tradition of bánh — a category of steamed, fried and baked dishes that encompasses everything from bánh bao dumplings to bánh xèo crispy pancakes.

At Preeda, the Vietnamese menu includes:

Phở with slow-cooked bone broth
Gỏi cuốn (fresh spring rolls with prawn and herbs)
Bánh Mì variations
Bún noodle dishes
Vietnamese salads with fish sauce-lime dressing

Why This Combination Works at Preeda

The risk with a dual-cuisine menu is dilution: attempting to do two things and doing neither particularly well. Preeda avoids this trap through a clear-eyed decision about what the two menus share and what keeps them distinct.

What they share: a commitment to fresh aromatics, quality protein, balanced flavour and proper technique. The kitchen is not cutting corners on either cuisine.

What keeps them distinct: the menus are not blended. Preeda does not serve "Thai-Vietnamese fusion" in the sense of hybrid dishes. The Thai dishes are Thai. The Vietnamese dishes are Vietnamese. They simply coexist on the same menu, offering a table the freedom to range across both traditions in a single meal.

This matters because it reflects how Southeast Asian food actually works: a shared table in Bangkok or Hanoi will frequently feature dishes from multiple culinary traditions, adapted to what's local and fresh. Preeda recreates that experience in the Bötzowkiez.

When to Choose Thai vs. Vietnamese at Preeda

Not sure what to order? Here's a simple guide:

Choose Thai if you want:

Rich, aromatic curries with coconut and paste-based depth
The satisfying weight of a Massaman or green curry with jasmine rice
The wok-fried intensity of Pad Thai or Pad Kra Pao
Fragrant coconut soups (Tom Kha)

Choose Vietnamese if you want:

Something lighter and broth-based (Phở)
Fresh, herb-forward dishes with a clean finish
The contrast of crispy and fresh in Bánh Xèo
A meal that leaves you satisfied without the weight of a curry

Order both if you're sharing — which is the correct answer, and the way this menu was designed to be eaten.

Preeda's Place in Berlin's Southeast Asian Food Scene

Berlin has a strong Vietnamese food tradition — the Vietnamese community in Berlin dates to the GDR era, when workers were invited from Vietnam and many remained after reunification. This has produced a genuine, community-rooted Vietnamese food culture in the city. There are excellent Vietnamese restaurants, particularly in Lichtenberg, Marzahn and parts of Mitte.

The Thai side of the equation is newer and concentrated in the west, anchored by the Thai Park tradition.

Preeda occupies unique territory: a restaurant in the dining heart of Prenzlauer Berg that brings both traditions together, in a neighbourhood that expects and appreciates serious cooking. There is, quite simply, nowhere else in Berlin where you can eat both a genuinely excellent Gaeng Keow Wan and a genuinely excellent Phở in the same sitting.
