Berlin has one of the most authentic Vietnamese food cultures in all of Europe — and yet in Prenzlauer Berg, finding truly excellent Vietnamese cooking has always required either an adventurous walk or a good local tip. Most of the neighbourhood's Asian restaurants skew Thai, pan-Asian or Japanese. The Vietnamese options that do exist tend toward the quick and functional rather than the considered and careful.

Preeda changes that. At Bötzowstraße 25, alongside its acclaimed Thai menu, Preeda serves Vietnamese food that takes the cuisine seriously: slow-cooked broths, fresh herbs at the table, rice noodles with real bite and the kind of balance that defines Vietnam's extraordinary culinary tradition.

Why Vietnamese Food Belongs in Prenzlauer Berg

Prenzlauer Berg's food scene has always skewed European — Italian trattorias, French brasseries, German Gasthäuser — but the neighbourhood's increasingly internationally-minded and well-travelled dining public has created genuine appetite for something more. Vietnamese cuisine, with its emphasis on freshness, balance and aromatic complexity, fits perfectly alongside Prenzlauer Berg's wine-focused, produce-forward food culture.

The neighbourhood also has the right infrastructure: Vietnamese-owned Asian grocery shops supply fresh herbs and specialty ingredients to the restaurants that know where to look. Preeda uses them.

The Vietnamese Menu at Preeda: What to Order

Phở — The Soul of Vietnamese Cooking

A Phở is only as good as its broth, and a broth is only as good as the time and care invested in it. Preeda's Phở starts with bones: beef bones (for Phở Bò) or chicken (for Phở Gà), roasted then simmered for hours with charred ginger, charred onion, star anise, cinnamon, cloves and coriander seeds. The result is a broth with extraordinary depth — clear, brown-golden, fragrant with warm spice without tasting spiced.

The broth arrives with rice noodles and your choice of protein — rare beef sliced thin (it cooks in the hot broth at the table), well-done brisket, chicken, or a combination. On the side: a plate of fresh bean sprouts, Thai basil, sawtooth coriander, lime wedges and fresh bird's eye chilli. The garnish plate is not an afterthought; it is an integral part of the dish. Phở eaten without the fresh herbs is like pizza without the mozzarella.

At Preeda, the Phở is among the best in Prenzlauer Berg. Full stop.

Gỏi Cuốn (Fresh Spring Rolls)

Gỏi cuốn are the antithesis of deep-fried spring rolls — light, fresh, translucent rice paper wrapped around prawns (or tofu), rice vermicelli, cucumber, fresh mint and coriander. The dipping sauce is a peanut-hoisin blend with a hit of fresh chilli. They are the best possible thing to eat at the start of a Vietnamese meal: they clear the palate, preview the freshness that's coming and leave you wanting more rather than full.

Bánh Xèo (Vietnamese Crispy Pancake)

One of Vietnam's most visually dramatic dishes: a large, sizzling rice flour pancake coloured golden-yellow with turmeric, folded over a filling of prawn, pork belly and bean sprouts. The name — bánh xèo — translates as "sizzling cake," named for the sound it makes in the pan. It arrives crispy-edged and steaming, to be broken into pieces, wrapped in lettuce leaves with fresh herbs and dipped in nước chấm dipping sauce. Eating it is a hands-on, communal, utterly delicious exercise.

Bún Bò Huế

Less well-known than Phở but arguably more complex: this spicy beef noodle soup from the former imperial city of Huế is made with lemongrass-scented broth, a deep red colour from shrimp paste and dried chilli, thick round rice noodles and a combination of beef shank and pork. Where Phở is subtle and warming, Bún Bò Huế is assertive, aromatic and genuinely spicy. For those who find Phở too delicate, this is the dish.

The Herb Table: Vietnamese Dining Culture at Preeda

One of the things that distinguishes a serious Vietnamese restaurant from a casual one is the herb table. In Vietnamese food culture, fresh herbs are not a garnish — they are a primary ingredient, consumed in large quantities to balance, refresh and complicate the dishes they accompany. At Preeda, the herb plate arrives properly: Thai basil, coriander, sawtooth herb, mint, bean sprouts, lime.

Eat generously from it. This is what Vietnamese food tastes like when it's done right.

How Prenzlauer Berg's Vietnamese Scene Compares

The Vietnamese restaurant landscape in Prenzlauer Berg has improved markedly in recent years. Umami P-Berg (Schönhauser Allee area) offers reliable pho and a broad menu. Mamáy has a strong reputation for its tea house atmosphere and Vietnamese home cooking. Anjoy on Rykestraße has been a neighbourhood fixture for years.

Each has its strengths. Preeda's distinction is twofold:

The combination with Thai cuisine — no other Vietnamese restaurant in Prenzlauer Berg offers a Thai menu of this quality alongside the Vietnamese dishes. For tables with mixed preferences, this is decisive.
The Bötzowkiez location — quieter, more local and more intimate than the busy Schönhauser Allee strip, with a neighbourhood atmosphere that rewards those who make the slight detour.

Vietnamese Food in Berlin: A Brief Cultural Context

It is worth noting the depth of Vietnamese food culture in Berlin. The city's Vietnamese community — one of the largest in Germany — traces its roots to agreements between East Germany and Vietnam in the 1980s, when Vietnamese workers arrived under bilateral labour agreements. Many remained after reunification, establishing businesses and communities across the city.

This history has produced a Vietnamese food culture in Berlin that is genuinely rooted in community rather than simply transplanted for a restaurant audience. The best Vietnamese food in Berlin is cooked by people for whom these are family recipes, regional traditions and culinary identities. When you eat at a serious Vietnamese restaurant in Berlin, you are participating in that history.

Preeda approaches its Vietnamese menu with this awareness. The cooking is respectful, skilled and honest.

Frequently Asked Questions: Vietnamese Restaurant Prenzlauer Berg

Is the Phở at Preeda made with real bone broth? Yes — Preeda's Phở broth is made in-house from bones, slow-cooked with the traditional spice profile of star anise, cinnamon and charred aromatics. It is not made from commercial stock.

Can I eat Vietnamese food at Preeda even if my dining partner wants Thai? Absolutely — this is precisely the point of the dual menu. One person can order Phở while another orders green curry. Both cuisines are treated with equal seriousness in the kitchen.

What is the best dish on the Vietnamese menu? The Phở Bò (beef noodle soup) and the Bánh Xèo (crispy Vietnamese pancake) are both exceptional. If you're visiting for the first time, start with the Phở — it is the best way to understand the kitchen's standards.

Is Preeda the only restaurant with Vietnamese food in Prenzlauer Berg? No — there are a handful of Vietnamese options in the neighbourhood. Preeda's distinction is the quality of its Vietnamese dishes alongside a full Thai menu, its location in the quieter Bötzowkiez, and the overall atmosphere and cooking standard.
